Pippin
Hired, once again, by Music Theater Works to design the media for their spring production of Pippin, director, Kyle Dougan, wanted to bring Pippin into a new era. This production would be supported by the nostalgia and feelings of the 1980’s and this would media would play a huge part in accomplishing that.
Working with ArtLab Media to program the production, we designed separate designs to be played concurrently on the four television sets placed throughout the stage. Bringing the audience back to the 80s right off the bat with a preshow channel surf through 80s cable television. We continued that throughout the show with 8-bit pixel video games, references to 80s sitcoms, composites of 80’s news-casts, a recreation of Windows 3.1, and other designs that are quintessentially 80s.
My biggest goal as a designer and a student of musical theater, was to make sure these 80s designs still felt like they were in the world of Pippin, meaning lighthearted and whimsical, but with a dark and devious undertone.
